Learning about herbs at home is not only possible — it’s deeply rewarding. Whether you’re just beginning or looking to expand your knowledge, there are powerful tools available to help you understand the science and tradition behind medicinal plants.
Start by researching one herb at a time. Look into its history of use, safety profile, and what modern research has to say. When you're ready to dig deeper, here are a few trusted resources you can use:
PubMed (pubmed.gov): A free database of scientific studies, ideal for finding clinical research on herbs, active compounds, and their physiological effects.
Google Scholar (scholar.google.com): Another excellent tool for accessing peer-reviewed articles, ethnobotanical studies, and academic reviews.
Herbal Organizations: Groups like the American Herbalists Guild (AHG) and United Plant Savers offer educational resources and reading lists for learners at every level.
As you study, always consider the source and context of the information — blending traditional knowledge with modern science creates a well-rounded understanding of herbal medicine. Pay attention to bias and if anyone stands to profit from discrediting herbal medicines- as those will not yield valid results.
Knowledge is power! Let’s grow together!

If you’ve noticed a lot of disclaimers on herbal products, it’s not because herbs aren’t effective — it’s because regulations limit how we’re allowed to talk about them.
In the United States, herbal remedies are regulated as dietary supplements, not drugs. That legal distinction means we can describe how herbs support the body’s natural processes, but we can’t claim they treat, cure, or prevent any disease — even when there’s clinical research or centuries of traditional use to support those actions.
These disclaimers are required by the FDA to avoid crossing into “drug claim” territory, not because herbal medicine lacks credibility. In fact, many pharmaceutical drugs were originally derived from plant compounds, and herbal medicine remains the primary form of care for nearly 80% of the world’s population.
Disclaimers exist to meet legal requirements — not to diminish the power of plants or the practitioners who work with them. Herbal medicine is grounded in science, informed by tradition, and increasingly supported by modern research. Our commitment to transparency simply means we speak within the framework the law allows — while continuing to honor the deep roots and proven value of botanical medicine.
